Abstract
This article analyzes an important short story by Machado de Assis entitled Entre Santos. In this story a priest passes in front of his church late at night and notices that lights are on. He is intrigued. He opens the building and when he gets close to the nave of the church he notices that some saints are talking. He gets very upset and, very afraid, he hides in a corner to hear what the saints are talking about. The conversation is about
two people who went to church that day, an adulterous woman who wanted to break off her relationship with her lover, and a miserly man who comes to ask for the health of his wife who is suffering from a terrible disease.
